We asked some teachers for their takes on Christmas! Here’s what they had to say!
Do you have a favourite Christmas film?
Mr McClory: Muppets Christmas Carol
Ms Robinson: I love so many Christmas movies, it's silly. I went to see ‘It's a Wonderful Life’ last weekend and remembered how much I love that. ‘Arthur Christmas’ is another favourite. The English Department correspond about the latest rubbish Netflix movies every year - ‘The Knight Before Christmas’ must be seen to be believed. But my absolute favourite is ‘The Muppets Christmas Carol’.
Ms Bowden: ‘The Grinch’ and ‘The Holiday’
Dr Williams: Much as I love 'The Muppet Christmas Carol', and I think Will Ferrell should have got an Oscar for 'Elf' - the best is 'It's a Wonderful Life'
Mr Barkham: ‘Die Hard’ - all of them!
Is there a Christmas/Winter tradition you have that you particularly look forward to?
Mr McClory: Attacking my brother (in a festive/jocular fashion).
Ms Robinson: My family go skating at Somerset House every Christmas Eve. I love ice skating and we've done it since I was very little, so it feels particularly special.
Ms Bowden: Lots of winter walks and board games with friends and family.
Mr Barkham: Christmas lunch is great.
What’s the best present you’ve ever given or received?
Mr McClory: ‘Gladiator’ on film (I was 8).
Ms Robinson: One of my favourites was my yellow umbrella. It opens with a button, has a lovely smooth handle and hooks onto my rucksack. It makes me want it to rain. I like to make presents - I'm particularly proud of a homemade photo album in the style of the Mean Girls 'Burn Book' for a friend in Sixth Form.
Ms Bowden: A hamster (called Toffee) when I was 10
Dr Williams: When I was little I was given a guinea pig - we called him 'Santa'.
Mr Barkham: Vegan Leather Gloves
Favourite Christmas song(s)?
Mr McClory: Shania Twain/Michael Buble, ‘White Christmas’ duet/Obscure Irish Folk Christmas Tunes.
Ms Robinson: Carol is 'In The Bleak Midwinter' (Holst). Song... my Christmas playlist is 30 hours long, so this is hard. I do love 'River' by Joni Mitchell a lot.
Ms Bowden: Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses
Dr Williams: 'Christmas Wrapping' (if only for the bass line). And I have two favourite Christmas albums - 'Songs for Christmas' by Sufjan Stevens and 'Christmas in the Heart' by Bob Dylan
Mr Barkham: Step into Christmas by Elton John
Favourite book for winter/ a book recommendation for the holidays?
Mr McClory: Natasha Pulley, ‘The Watchmaker of Filigree Street’.
Ms Robinson: ‘Christmas Pudding’ by Nancy Mitford is sparkly, silly and fun. One character writes thank you letters to people he knows gave him nothing, so that they feel bad and are forced to send him a gift. Genius idea.
Ms Bowden: I don't have one that is specifically wintery but I'm currently reading Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes which is very good.
Dr Williams: 'Jeeves and the Yuletide Spirit' (short story by P.G. Wodehouse)
Mr Barkham: Time traveller's guide to Medieval history .
A favourite Christmas/Winter food?
Mr McClory: Stuffing with gravy, leftover chicken sandwich, a mess.
Ms Bowden: Yule log or roast turkey with stuffing
