Best Beginner Crochet Projects

Updated: Dec 21, 2022

Always wanted to try crocheting but never known where to start? Here we’ve compiled a list of the top 6 projects to try if you want to get into this fun and creative hobby over the holidays! See the links at the bottom of the page for some more useful tutorials.

1. Aliceband/headband: These simple accessories can be made by crocheting a strip using single crochet (a.k.a. double crochet, in UK terminology) stitch, and are easy to tailor by changing the width/length of the strip. I would recommend choosing an adjustable one with a tie at the base of the head, since the band will stretch over time. 2. Fingerless gloves: In their simplest form, each glove consists of a rectangle sewn up the sides to form a tube, with a gap for the thumb. To jazz them up, why not try adding ribbing to the wrist, ruffles, or even a little bow or flower to decorate.

3. Pot holder: Use to handle hot pots coming out of the oven, or as a heatproof mat on tables/counters.To make one, simply crochet a square or rectangle using a single crochet (double crochet) stitch. You can use a simple block colour, or for a challenge try some intarsia or tapestry (a design within the square). Make sure to use cotton yarn, not acrylic, as the plastic in it will melt when in contact with hot pots. For an extra challenge, use a thermal stitch (this will make you pot holder very thick). 4. Phone bag: This is a great way to use up scrap bits of yarn from other projects. To make one, crochet 2 rectangles/squares of the same size in which your phone can fit. You can use any stitches, colours, and yarn. Then, sew them together. Now add a strap, consisting of a chain and any number of rows of your desired stitch.

5. Purse/shoulder bag: To make a basic bag, crochet a rectangle using any stitch and colours, and sew up the sides with a needle and thread. You canexperiment with funky buttons, zips and shoulder straps.

6. Coaster: These practical and quick projects are perfect to make in batches. There are so many different ones you can make so they are a great customisable gift. Here is a link to a basic one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vItcjc8nJ9o&ab_channel=CrochetandTea
