For those who don’t know, the Met Gala is the “fashion world equivalent of the Oscars.” It’s an event where fashion superstars, designers, models and Hollywood stars arrive in the most over-the-top looks which fit into broadly different themes every year. These themes range from camp, religion, punk and more. The evening is not just for showing off their fashion ideas but also aims to celebrate and fundraise a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The theme this year was American Independence, showcasing it’s first two-part exhibition for 2021 and 2022.
1. Lil Nas X – All Three Iconic Looks
At his first ever Met Gala, Lil Nas X wowed the audience with three iconic looks.
Firstly, he came in with a stunning ornate cape with intricate gold beading. This outfit had a regal effect that drew in the attention of everyone around him.
Next, he removed the cape to reveal a golden suit of armour, which was original and totally fitting for his character. Also, it reminded us of C3-PO from Star Wars!
His third and final outfit was an extravagant bodysuit, the bodycon design covered in crystals and Versace’s signature house print.
2. Iman in Dolce & Gabbana x Harris Reed
If this didn’t draw the attention of everyone present at the event, I don’t know what would have!
Iman stole the show in this jaw-dropping dress with an equally extravagant headdress. As always, she looked absolutely gorgeous and visibly glowed as she strutted the carpet.
3. Anok Yai in Oscar De La Renta and Ana Khouri jewelery
Talk about stunning! Anok Yai left everyone breathless when she showed up in this beautifully embroidered dress. This look followed a design of crescent moons and stars. An elegant, fluffy black cloak pulled the outfit together, along with a sparkling necklace.
4. Kim Kardashian and Demna Gvasalia in Balenciaga
This look was definitely original! Kim and Demna showed up twinning, in unique and elegant black cloak-style looks. Kim’s outfit was a flattering black dress with a flowing black train. Demna was dressed similarly in baggy black clothing. They both had a black face covering which hid their entire neck and face from view.
5. Adut Akech in Michael Kors Collection
Personally, we LOVED this look. It was iconic, breathtaking and she looked absolutely beautiful. She owned the evening in white suit trousers and a blazer which matched perfectly with the silvery top she wore underneath.
6. Dan Levy in Loewe
Making a statement? Dan Levy did just that in his flamboyant costume which contained an important message. This Schitt’s Creek star collaborated with Loewe’s Jonathan Anderson and Cartier to create a look that didn’t only look amazing, but was also politically powerful. He stepped onto the carpet in a colourful outfit with dramatic puffed sleeves and a hand-embroidered portrait of a queer couple kissing in the center of his chest. His costume was said to have celebrated ‘the resilience, love and the joy’ of the LGBTQ+ community.
7. Kaia Gerber in Oscar De La Renta
Classy AND head-turning? This look checks all the boxes. Kaia Gerber stopped the show in this simple yet stunning black dress. She exuded pure elegance in this gown that featured intricate floral detailing around the neckline.
8. Paloma Elsesser in Zac Posen
Flattering, jaw-dropping and all things red!
Paloma Elsesser turned heads at the gala in this breathtaking crimson dress. Her inspiration for this outfit came from the idea of ‘rewriting what an American icon looks like.’ With this look, Paloma wanted to redefine what it meant ot be a modern American icon. “I am in constant commitment to rewriting the rules that I was indoctrinated into thinking were the right one,” she said on the carpet.
9. Winnie Harlow in Iris Van Herpen
All I have to say is, WOAH! Winnie Harlow looked beautiful in her Iris Van Herpen jumpsuit inspired by an optical illusion design. This extravagant outfit featured a dramatic cape and she made the night as she strutted confidently down the carpet in this gorgeous costume.
10. Anna Wintour in Oscar De La Renta
Last but definitely not least is the stunning Anna Wintour, who left mouths open in this original floral design. The gown was long-sleeved with a mermaid shape and ruffled train, which she pulled off perfectly. This is significantly different to her usual Chanel looks, which she wears to most prestigious evenings.
All in all, this year's Met Gala was a roaring success. We can’t wait for next year!
